My wonderful, sweet 82 year-old mother-in-law has been hooked up to a box for the past year that has pumped her daily with poison so toxic that it has paralyzed her with debilitating fear and anger. She cannot turn it off, she believes in the poison, every drop of it, she craves it. She is going to need detox, intervention, help. I know there are many of you who have family members going through this, and after election day, the numbers will be overwhelming.
How are the families affected going to deal with the brainwashed, the poisoned, the fearful, and the angry? I want to know. I hold you, Fox network, accountable for what you have wrought on our country. You have messed up the minds of many of the most vulnerable; the elderly, the shut-ins, the computer illiterate, people from South Carolina, like my in-laws.
Fox news is like crystal meth in a small town, taking over the lives of the bored, the less-educated, the rural folks with its momentary high; (there is a lot of energy created by hating, especially in group hate), This high leaves an ugly aftermath for someone to deal with.
After the collective, worldwide sigh of relief next Tuesday evening, after the joyous celebrations, after a moment or two of satisfied gloating over the defeat of lies, smears, and McCarthyism, there will be much work ahead, a lot of healing, much of it within our families.
I used to drop in on my husband's parents, their house a happy place, and she was so glad to see me, so happy to have a visit. Now, the TV stays on during our visit, with the visage of Sean Hannity's face, Bill O'Reilly's mug a constant presence. Dire talk in the background, the boos from the McCain rally, Sarah Palin's voice try to drown out our small talk about the weather, the grandchildren, her health.
We really don't talk as much anymore, but when we do, she always mentions that she is "scared to death for our country". She repeats word for word the talking points she has heard from the bevy of blondes on Fox. We now live in two different worlds, and I search for common ground. Obama "frightens" her, and I am truly concerned about her health going downhill after this is over next week.
Anyone have any ideas on dealing with family members going through this same thing? Maybe we need an intervention guide, a detox program for loved ones. Fox news should be liable for the destruction they have created.
